A good lockable storage box keeps things private, organized and fresh, and keeps kids and pets out. Here's what to look for, how the main types compare, and where ours fits. (We sell one, so keep that in mind.)
What to look for
- Lock type: combination locks mean no keys to lose; key locks are simple and sturdy.
- Odor control: a tight lid plus a carbon absorber, or smell-proof containers inside.
- Organization: dividers, a tray and containers so things don't end up in a jumble.
- Material: wood and bamboo look great; metal is toughest; fabric cases are best for travel.
- Size: big enough for what you store now, with a little room to grow.
- Price: most quality lockable boxes cost $40 to $100.
Bamboo vs. metal vs. fabric
| Bamboo / wood | Metal | Fabric / soft case | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Looks | Warm, natural, display-worthy | Utilitarian | Casual |
| Durability | Good | Best | Fair |
| Odor control | Good with a sealed lid and absorber | Good with a gasket | Good if lined with carbon |
| Best for | Home storage | Maximum security | Travel |
